Project delivered by Halmar Infrastructure Development expands access for thousands of daily riders.
NEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, October 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — A set of updated and modernized ADA compliant elevators have opened at the 161st Street–Yankee Stadium subway station in the Bronx, expanding accessible pathways through one of the borough’s most heavily used transit hubs. The work was delivered by Halmar Infrastructure Development (Halmar ID) and its affiliate Halmar International as part of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s ADA 13 Stations Program — a citywide initiative to improve accessibility across New York City’s subway system.
Located adjacent to Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees, the station serves commuters, residents, sports fans, and visitors throughout the year, with passenger volumes peaking significantly during major sporting and entertainment events. The new accessible entrance expands the options available to riders who require ADA accessible access when traveling to and from the station.
For riders with disabilities, seniors, and families with strollers, navigating the station complex — which spans multiple levels and connects the 4 and B/D subway lines — has long presented challenges. The new entrances add accessible routes through the complex, giving more riders the ability to travel more conveniently and independently.
The improvements delivered at 161st Street include 5 new elevators / a renovated street-level entrance on 161st Street and ADA-compliant fare gates and were carried out in coordination with the MTA to maintain passenger service throughout construction.
The 161st Street–Yankee Stadium station is one of thirteen locations planned under the MTA’s 3rd Package Stations Program, the first transit-oriented public-private partnership (P3) project undertaken by the MTA. The program was recently recognized with the prestigious P3 Bulletin Award in the Social Impact category, highlighting its transformative role in expanding equitable access to New York City’s transit network.
Halmar Infrastructure Development, the U.S. infrastructure development arm of Italy-based ASTM Group, serves as development and delivery partner for the program and will oversee long-term maintenance of the new infrastructure as additional stations are completed. ASTM Group operates across transportation concessions, engineering, construction, and infrastructure technology in 15 countries and has been active in the United States since 2017 through its subsidiary Halmar International, contributing to major transportation and infrastructure projects across the Nation.
