Roadmap 4 Innovation Marks Six Months of Expanding Support for California Manufacturers

Six months after launching as a new California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Roadmap 4 Innovation (R4I) continues to expand opportunities for manufacturers across the state through expert training and hands-on technical assistance designed to help California manufacturers innovate, compete, and grow.

Over the past six months, R4I has worked alongside manufacturers to address some of today’s most pressing business challenges — from workforce shortages and operational inefficiencies to manufacturing modernization, digital transformation, cybersecurity readiness, supply chain resilience, and leadership development.

“California manufacturers don’t need more complexity — they need trusted partners who can help them identify opportunities, implement meaningful improvements, and achieve measurable results,” said Kim Manss, Chief Executive Officer of Roadmap 4 Innovation. “Our mission is to support manufacturers with the expertise and resources they need to strengthen their businesses today while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished during our first six months, but we’re even more excited about the opportunities ahead to help more California manufacturers strengthen their workforce, seize new opportunities, and achieve sustained success.”

A key milestone during R4I’s first six months has been the award of $400,000 through California’s Employment Training Panel (ETP), further expanding R4I’s ability to support manufacturers through workforce development. This funding helps qualifying manufacturers offset the cost of customized employee training in areas such as leadership development, operational excellence, digital technologies, quality systems, and continuous improvement — allowing companies to invest in employee development while reducing costs and strengthening long-term competitiveness.

Recognizing the growing need for practical operational improvement strategies, R4I also partnered with the Goldratt Group to bring Theory of Constraints (TOC) education to California manufacturers. Free introductory sessions held in Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, and San Diego introduced manufacturing leaders to the principles of improving operational flow, identifying bottlenecks, and increasing throughput. The sessions were followed by an immersive implementation workshop that provided organizations with practical tools to begin applying TOC directly within their operations.

One participating manufacturer, Eastman Music Company, has already begun applying the concepts across its operations.

“One of the biggest benefits has been helping us focus on the most important constraint instead of trying to solve every problem at once,” said Shylke Budiman-Tran, Director of Operations at Eastman Music Company. “That shift has led to better alignment and clearer priorities across departments. We’ve already seen improvements in warehouse coordination, receiving operations, and how we think about throughput and performance. Having a common language and framework has made our conversations much more productive.”

Beyond these initiatives, R4I continues to collaborate with manufacturers, educational institutions, workforce organizations, economic development partners, and industry associations throughout California to expand access to expertise and accelerate innovation across the state’s manufacturing ecosystem.

As California manufacturers continue to navigate workforce challenges, technology adoption, and an increasingly competitive global marketplace, R4I remains committed to delivering practical, results-driven solutions that help businesses grow and thrive.
