Octave Connects 200+ Therapist Calendars Using Nylas Calendar API to Power Behavioral Health Scheduling

Nylas, the communications data layer for modern software, recently published a case study detailing how Octave used the Nylas Calendar API and partnered with Nylas Professional Services to launch real-time Google Calendar connectivity for its behavioral health providers.

Octave is a modern behavioral health practice offering in-person and virtual therapy across multiple states, backed by more than $86 million in funding from Cigna Ventures, Novo Holdings, Greycroft, and Felicis Ventures. The company partners directly with major payers including Anthem, Aetna, and UnitedHealthcare, and 95% of its clients say therapy through Octave has been worth the effort. It was recently named a USA TODAY Top Workplace.

Real-time calendar visibility sits at the center of Octave’s care model. Therapists rely on accurate views of their availability, clients need a friction-free way to book or reschedule, and payer integrations depend on scheduling data being correct. Building that infrastructure in-house would have required more than integrating with Google and Microsoft. It would have meant navigating Google’s OAuth scope verification, configuring multi-environment authentication, and designing a webhook architecture that could hold up under real scheduling load, all before shipping a single new feature.

For a company already navigating HIPAA, payer contracts, and a rapidly growing therapist network, that was weeks of engineering work that had nothing to do with the product. Rather than absorb the cost, Octave purchased a Nylas QuickLaunch onboarding package. The Nylas Professional Services team worked alongside Octave’s engineers to prepare for Google’s OAuth verification process, configure authentication flows, and establish the calendar synchronization architecture required for launch.

“Calendar infrastructure sounds unglamorous, but for a behavioral health practice, it’s everything. It’s how clients get care. We needed it to work across every provider, at scale, without becoming a full-time engineering problem,” said the Octave engineering team. “Nylas gave us that, and their Professional Services team was in the weeds with us from the start. That made the difference between a smooth launch and months of integration debt.”

Within weeks, Octave launched Google Calendar connectivity for providers. More than 200 therapist calendars are now connected through Google, with calendar updates continuously synchronized to keep availability current. By combining Google Calendar data with existing scheduling data, Octave surfaced additional appointment inventory while reducing the risk of double bookings caused by scheduling conflicts outside its core healthcare systems.

“Behavioral health depends on clients getting to the right therapist at the right time, and that only happens when the calendar layer is reliable,” said Jeff Koets, CEO of Nylas. “Octave saw that clearly and chose to focus its engineers on clinical tools and outcome tracking rather than on OAuth verification. Our Professional Services team was proud to handle the plumbing so their team could handle the care model.”

Octave is now scaling toward all 50 states and deepening its payer partnerships. As the therapist network grows, so does the demand on its scheduling infrastructure. Nylas provides both the calendar backbone and the implementation support that scales with it.
